Monterrey are looking for a new coach, and one of the options they reportedly considered was Matías Almeyda. However, the "Pelado" will not become the team's new manager, so the club will have to keep weighing its options to find someone to lead them in both the Club World Cup and the Apertura 2025.
Following the dismissal of Martín Demichelis after their elimination in the Liguilla quarterfinals and amid a few controversies, began their search for a new manager and reportedly made an offer to Almeyda. However, the coach is not currently considering a return to Mexico, as his move to a club in the United Arab Emirates is reportedly very advanced, according to journalist César Luis Merlo.

Following this slight snub from Almeyda to —a coach with strong credentials and a proven track record in Mexican football—Monterrey must continue exploring the market, and all signs now point to Domènec Torrent as the leading candidate to take over the bench. Torrent, who was recently ruled out as Chivas' next coach, reportedly remains a strong contender to replace Demichelis. Gabriel Milito—who is also attracting interest from the —is another option rumored to be under consideration.
The reality is that the transfer market in Mexico is becoming more intriguing because of the coaches being considered rather than the players, as very few big-name signings have been linked so far for the upcoming tournament.

Almeyda managed Chivas from 2015 to 2018, winning two Copa MX titles (2015 and 2017), a Supercopa MX (2016), a Liga MX title (Clausura 2017—the last one for the Red and Whites), and the Concacaf Champions League in 2018. He later moved to the San Jose Earthquakes in MLS, where he was unable to win any championships.
As a coach, Almeyda has also managed Banfield and River Plate in his home country, as well as AEK Athens, where he won both the Greek Cup and Super Cup in 2023. It seems the Argentine's future is far from Mexican football—despite recurring rumors of a return since his departure from Chivas, the coach now appears to be aiming for a move to Asian football following his time in Europe.

Following their elimination from the Clausura 2025, Sergio Ramos and his Monterrey teammates will have a brief break before reporting back to training on May 26. The team will begin preparations for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, where they’ve been drawn into Group E alongside Inter Milan – whom they will face in their tournament opener on June 17 – River Plate, and Japan’s Urawa Reds.
